Conservatives Win Reading as Lib Dems are Relegated to Fourth Place

Euro Elections 1

The Reading Borough Count has just concluded and the provisional results are as follows:

                                Conservative                          9,894 (28.7%)

                                Labour                                  6,514 (18.9%)

                                Green                                   4,978 (14.4%)

                                Lib Dem                                 4,600 (13.3%)

                                UKIP                                      4,406 (12.8%)

                                BNP                                       1,390 (4%)

                                Christian Party                         602

                                English Democrats                    522

                                Socialist Party                          353

                                No2EU                                   301

                                Peace Party                            210

                                Libertas                                  166

                                UK First                                   140

                                Roman Party                            134

The total number of votes cast was 34,542 and turnout was 33%.

The first two places are no great surprise but the big surprise of the night was the Greens claiming third place and pushing the Lib Dems into fourth place, only just ahead of UKIP.  Across Reading in ward after ward the Lib Dems were relegated to fourth place and in wards like Kentwood and Church they came fifth.

  1. Interesting to note that the BNP have achieved their 1st European seat. As we all know their leadership are a bunch of racists—-and the people of the UK are not——so why do they pick up votes.
Anything to do ,I wonder, with the fact that the major parties prefer to ignore , rather than tackle, the UK’s imigration problem!
Accross Europe the Conservative governments of France,Germany,Italy ,Poland have done very well, as indeed have the Conservative opposition in Spain—-this could ,perhaps, form the basis of Gordon Brown’s ‘excuse’ for such a p*** poor performance.
I wonder how he will explain the Monster Raving Loonies beating both of Labour’s candidates in the council election in St Ives!!

  2. Gosh, were you expecting the Libs to crash to such a bad result? Wish I was there.

    • No I wasn’t! I expected the Lib Dems to benefit from Labour’s woes and possibly take second place, as I suspect did they. The Greens were absolutely thrilled with their performance, polling strongly in wards that they weren’t even working in the campaign.

  3. You forget to mention turnout was 33% – I bet you a tenner it will be higher at the General election.

    • Thanks. I will be posting a fuller article on the Reading results in due course.

I very much hope that the turnout will be much higher in a GE!
