Conservatives Support Reading Pride
Conservatives from Reading were out in force on Saturday to support the Reading Pride event. Local Conservatives have taken part in Reading Pride since its inception, supporting LGBT issues in the town.
Leader of the Conservative Party, David Cameron MP, sent a personal message to people attending Reading Pride. He wrote, “I am delighted to send my best wishes to all those attending this year’s Reading Pride festival and parade. Pride events have built up a great reputation over the years as a celebration of diversity and a means of raising awareness and promoting equality. Reading Pride is no exception with some 10,000 residents now attending each year. This is a great tribute to everyone involved, and to Reading itself. Have a great day.”
At this year’s event, the Conservatives created a petition to implement an anti-bullying policy of LGBT people in local schools. This is still a real area of concern because bullying of LGBT children can really affect educational performance, which in turn can impede their life chances. Conservatives were delighted with the response of visitors to Reading Pride and gained hundreds of signatures supporting the petition.
Reading East Member of Parliament Rob Wilson, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Reading West Alok Sharma, and Mayor of Reading Cllr Fred Pugh, joined a host of Conservative Councillors and supporters to look around the festival and welcome visitors to the Conservative Party stand.
Cllr Tim Harris, who organised the Conservative activities at Reading Pride, commented “The Pride event was a complete success. I truly believe that Pride parades across the country have really made a difference in reducing discrimination, and Reading Conservatives were delighted to get involved.”
