Reading Labour Party Corruption Exposed
There has been an interesting series of articles on other local blogs recently. My Lib Dem colleague Cllr Warren Swaine has been busily exposing different aspects of Reading Labour Party corruption and the way that they used their long time in office to disperse Council Tax payers’ money in nefarious ways and then claim that it was done by the Labour Party. To back up his claims Cllr Swaine has dusted off some previously collected Labour Party literature and quoted from the boasts it contains.
Former Reading East MP Jane Griffiths has now picked up on what has been said and provided corroberation for Cllr Swaine’s analysis. I also suggest that you read the comments underneath Ms Griffiths’ article.
I think I am going to dig out my collection of Labour leaflets from the last 15 years or so. There should be some interesting quotes amongst them!

When a party is in control of a Council, it doesn’t seem absurd to me that they should claim at least some of the credit for the things they instruct officers to do.
Seems common enough practice, eg

If the Council does something unpopular, do your leaflet say “The Council has”, or “Labour has”?
I dont think that passing off administration achievements as “party” successes is unusual but in Reading the Labour lot have siphoned off public money to support client groups in the hope and expectation of political support. That is what is corrupt. Jane Griffiths makes this point regularly on her blog.
If you’re looking at old election leaflets, Rob Wilson has a couple of cracking SDP ones from after he was spurned by the Labour Party.
Just go back to May and read about the evils of a hung parliament and, um, the weaknesses of coalition government. Oh yes, Tory campaign broadcasts with nooses. Funny eh? Not laughing now.
Has anyone got copies of the leaflets put out by the Conservatives when they fell out with the Fuads and decided to prevent their re-election? I still remember them as being fairly poisonous, though I can’t lay my hands on copies.
Christine – is that the best you can do – go back 20 years to one instance you claim makes your point? We are also talking about Labour corruption not attacks on opponents! I have dozens of Labour leaflets showing that kind of campaigning! Would you like me to run a series of articles on that?
Richard, it was you that said you would go back and “dig out my collection of Labour leaflets from the last 15 years or so”. Christine has merely moved the cut-off point back a bit. Don’t be snide, it doesn’t suit you.
I donated a whole bunch of old leaflets to the Berkshire Record Office in 2006. They should be available for consultation to anyone who is interested.
The worst think about Reading Labour Party is they don’t care about anything except
power.
There activist and membership base is shrinking because if you don’t agree with
the clique running things you are frozen
out.
When i finally saw sense and resigned from the party they made absolutely no attempt
to persuade me otherwise.
They don’t want principled people like me
in their party.
Asking Richard not to be snide is a bit like asking bankers to forgo their bonuses.
Phil the only snide person on here is you. Do you have a blog that we can post sarcastic comments on? You demean yourself everytime you post.
I think Dave Warren’s comment is a very revealing one about the real state of Reading Labour.
Phil the Greek reminds me of one or two people I know of. Things don’t change. Full of bile…God knows where it comes from!
If my comments were “full of bile” I am sure Richard would not publish them. To date this has not been the case. I am bringing a little balance to what is otherwise a very one-sided blog.
Phil – your comments are often petty and inaccurate however I let them through in the interests of debate. It is rare that I have had to block comments and usually only when they are downright offensive and personal. However, don’t delude yourself into thinking that I disagree with Jazz!
I think you will find that most blogs are “one-sided” as they represent the views of their author. I don’t see you commenting on our local Labour blogs to ensure “balance”. Perhaps you use a different name on them?
And there was me thinking that pettiness and inaccuracy not to mention distortion were the underlying themes of your blog. I don’t bother with the local Labour blogs – I find commenting on the ridiculousness of some of your posts to be much more fun.
Phil – is there any truth in the information I have received that you are a well known Labour activist in Reading?!
Well if he is a Labour activist in Reading that narrows things down a bit!
