Tonight both the Reading Lib Dems and Labour parties elected their Group leadership team. My sources tell me that the Lib Dems elected an all-woman team with Cllr Daisy Benson as their new leader and Cllr Rebecca Rye as deputy leader. Both Daisy and Rebecca are decent honorable individuals who are fully signed-up “members of the human race”.
Reading Labour party held their election in the Council chamber tonight with many non-Councillors present and the question will be asked whether they paid for the facility as it was clearly a meeting comprising many non-Councillors. I understand that there was a leadership challenge from one of the “young bloods” (although I have not been able to confirm this) but that the same tired old team of Cllr Jo Lovelock and Cllr Tony Page were elected as leader and deputy leader respectively. Since there is clearly growing discontent within the Labour group at Lovelock’s leadership style and their failure to make the gains they needed to take control last week, I would be interested to hear from any readers how the vote went.
